In 1995, Art Zimmer was first introduced to a neo-classic luxury car in Syracuse that sported his name, and the event was just the beginning of Mr. Zimmer's relationship with the Zimmer automobile. In 1996, Mr. Zimmer purchased his first Zimmer car, a 1987 Golden Spirit, and later that same year started the Zimmer Motor Car Club. Not long after, in 1997, Mr. Zimmer decided to enter the automobile manufacturing industry and started the Zimmer Neo-Classic Motor Car Company from scratch.

Being committed to Central New York, Mr. Zimmer partnered up with Sam's Auto Body in Syracuse to make the production of the Zimmer a reality. On why he chose Sam's Auto Body as the manufacturing facility, Mr. Zimmer said, "Sam's had the reputation as the largest, finest quality and best-equipped body shop in the area. I felt that's what was necessary to do the job."

Mr. Zimmer chose Sam's Auto Body as the manufacturing facility over shops in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Delaware based on the company's quality repairs and service, reputation, longevity and commitment to Syracuse. Both Mr. Zimmer and Mr. Vigliotti (owner of Sam's Auto Body) foresee a positive economic impact on the Syracuse community.
